Winter on the plateau: the leak season
Enumclaw sits higher and colder than much of the Puget Sound lowlands, and a hard freeze here can split a pipe overnight. The damage often doesn’t appear until the thaw, when water starts spraying in a crawlspace or garage.
- Disconnect hoses and cover outdoor faucets before the first freeze
- Insulate exposed pipes in crawlspaces, garages and along outside walls
- Keep crawlspace vents closed during cold snaps
- Let a faucet drip on outside walls during the coldest nights
- Know where your main shut-off is. It’s the fastest way to limit damage.

What should I do first if I find a leak?
Stop the water. Close the shut-off valve for that fixture if there is one, or shut off the main water valve to the house. Move valuables away, soak up what you can, and call us at 360-829-7440. If water is near outlets or light fixtures, keep clear and shut off power to that area.
Do you do leak detection?
We repair leaks. Most leaks we’re called for can be traced and fixed on the spot. If a leak is truly hidden, such as under a slab or deep inside a wall, and can’t be pinpointed by normal inspection, we can bring in a specialized leak detection service and then make the repair.
Why do pipes leak in the winter in Enumclaw?
Enumclaw typically runs about five degrees colder than Seattle in winter. Water that freezes in a pipe expands and can split it. Often the leak doesn’t show until the pipe thaws. Crawlspaces, exterior walls, garages and outdoor faucets are the usual trouble spots.
